Syracuse encapsulates Sicilian history more completely than almost anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Greek ruins rise out of citrus orchards. Byzantine churches stand on the foundations of ancient temples. And at the centre of it all, connected to the mainland by a short bridge, is Ortigia - an island old town so concentrated in beauty and character that most guests spend their first morning simply walking it, unable to decide which direction to turn.
Our collection of luxury villas in Syracuse ranges from apartments and town houses within Ortigia itself to coastal villas on the Maddalena peninsula with direct sea access, and spacious countryside properties near the sandy beaches of Fontane Bianche to the south. Each property has been personally selected by our founder, Cristina Swift, whose 30 years of Sicilian expertise shows in every recommendation.
Syracuse is well-connected and easy to reach from various parts of Sicily. The most convenient option for international travellers is flying into Catania Airport, which offers seamless connections to Syracuse.

Syracuse, located on the southeastern coast of Sicily, is renowned for its rich history, cultural significance, and stunning architecture. Founded by ancient Greek colonists, it was once a powerful city-state and a major centre of political and economic activity in the Mediterranean.
The city boasts numerous historical attractions, including the Greek Theatre, Roman Amphitheatre, and the Temple of Apollo, reflecting its ancient past. Syracuse also has beautiful beaches and vibrant local cuisine which contribute to its reputation as a desirable holiday destination.
Absolutely! Syracuse is a city rich in history and culture, making it a fantastic destination for all travellers. Visitors can explore ancient ruins, such as the Greek Theatre and Roman Amphitheatre, and marvel at historic structures like the Cathedral of Santa Maria delle Colonne. The city’s blend of historical sites, beautiful beaches, and excellent cuisine means there’s something for everyone so every tourist is bound to have an engaging experience.
Syracuse is mentioned in the Bible in the New Testament book of Acts. According to Acts 28:12, the Apostle Paul landed at Syracuse and stayed there for three days during his voyage to Rome. This brief visit is the main biblical reference to the city, highlighting its role as a notable stop in Paul’s missionary journeys.
Ortigia is the ancient island at the heart of Syracuse, connected to the modern city by a short bridge. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Europe, with a recorded history stretching back over 2,700 years. The island contains some of the finest Greek, Byzantine, and Baroque architecture in Sicily - including the Temple of Apollo, the Cathedral built over a 5th century BC Greek temple, and the Piazza del Duomo. It is small enough to walk from end to end in under 20 minutes. Staying in Ortigia means staying at the centre of this history, with everything on foot.
It depends on where your villa is. If you're staying within Ortigia itself, a car is genuinely unnecessary for your daily routine - the island is walkable, there are no cars permitted in most of the centro storico, and the fish market, restaurants, and archaeological sites are all on foot. For day trips to Noto, Agrigento, or Etna, a hire car makes sense. If your villa is outside the city centre - on the Maddalena peninsula or near Fontane Bianche - a car is useful for getting into Syracuse and essential for wider exploration.

Fontane Bianche, around 15km south of the city, is the most popular - a long, sandy, shallow beach with good facilities and calm water, well-suited to families. The Maddalena peninsula, around 8km from the centre, offers rocky coves and exceptional snorkelling in the Plemmirio marine reserve - not sandy, but the water quality is among the finest in Sicily. Further south, the beaches at Avola and Noto (Lido di Noto, Calamosche) are around 30–40 minutes away and are some of the most beautiful on the island.
Yes - particularly for families who want a mix of beach and culture. The beaches at Fontane Bianche and Avola have shallow, calm water well-suited to young children. Ortigia itself is manageable for families with children who like history and walking, though the narrow streets and stone steps require some patience with pushchairs. For the right family with older children, the combination of the Greek Theatre, the fish market at dawn, and a beach afternoon makes for one of the richest villa holidays in Sicily. We can advise on which specific properties work best for families.
Syracuse is one of the best-positioned bases on the island for day trips. Noto and its Baroque corso are 30 minutes south. Ragusa Ibla is under an hour. The Vendicari Nature Reserve — one of Sicily's finest unspoilt beaches — is 35 minutes. Catania is 50 minutes north, with Mount Etna reachable in under 90 minutes. Taormina is around 90 minutes. The Val di Noto UNESCO circuit - Modica, Scicli, Ragusa — can be covered comfortably as a two-day loop from a Syracuse base.
